Travelling to Africa is something that had been in the back of my mind for years. My Dad hunted Kenya before it closed, and I grew up looking at all those trophies.
In December, I received a call from Ron McAlpin, a friend with whom I have shared many campfires in Alaska, with an invitation to join his group going to South Africa.
After plans were made, reservations set and arrangements finalized, we arrived in Johannesburg in May. With a good meal and night of sleep at a B&B (which caters to international hunters) we were picked up by our PH and on our way to camp.
The first couple of days were spent hunting plains game and getting a feel for things. However, Cape Buffalo was at the top of my list, and the day to go finally came. On day one we saw a number of bulls, even got on the sticks twice, but no cigar. The next day we came across an ancient old Dagga Boy. He was by himself as the more verile bulls had kicked him out of the herd. I made the decision that he was the one.
After 3 days of looking, tracking, thorns and sweating we finally closed the deal. What an amazing and magnificent animal.
As it always does, the hunt ended too quickly. All five in our group took the animals on their respective lists. Ron also took an exceptional Buffalo. There are many new stories to tell and trophies to hang.
We hunted with Rene and Ronald Barnard of Global Safaris South Africa. Everything about the camp, staff and fellow guests was wonderfull. A truely special experience.
